Choosing a Patron Saint and a Sponsor

The programme for Confirmation in 2025 will come to an end in the next few weeks.

It is important that the young people who are preparing for Confirmation, have engaged fully in the programme, attended all sessions and cooperated fully with the catechists and those organising the programme.

They should, by now, have chosen a sponsor and the name of their Patron Saint. They will be given the name of their Patron, during the Confirmation Service. It is important that the young person knows their sponsor and knows why they have chosen a Saint as their Patron. They will be asked about this during the service.

Choosing a Sponsor and Patron Saint for Confirmation

WHO CAN BE MY SPONSOR?

A Practising Roman Catholic

Attends Mass regularly on Sundays

Baptised and Confirmed

Over 16 years of age

Not your own mother or father

The Church asks sponsors to become actively involved in the spiritual growth of those who they are sponsoring by:

  • Giving an example of Catholic living
  • Encouraging them to be faithful in their membership of the Church
  • Praying for them

This means that a sponsor should be a person who is in regular contact and is involved in the life of the person who is to be confirmed. In this way continuing support and encouragement can be given. A sponsor can sponsor more than one candidate.

You should only accept the invitation to be a sponsor if you are sincerely prepared to accept these responsibilities

The following presentation outlines the role of a Confirmation Sponsor. Please download and read through it, carefully.
